When I think about my career over 22 years, and all those years building up to medical school, the one thing I really should’ve sought out was a mentor. Someone who had been there done it and got the T-shirt, understood the nuances, pitfalls and choices, to draw a map of possibilities and potential futures.

My career has taken me on an adventure through general practice, psychiatry, commissioning, education, leadership, health economics and global health. I love what I do and wouldn’t changed it for the world. But what if I had had a strategic advisor, a trusted colleague, an honest mirror, a wise hand to steer me away from ‘tiger country’ ? Would I have got to my position faster, better, more effectively or with greater enjoyment ?

Having a mentor is akin to having an invisible hand guiding you through your career journey, providing support and encouragement every step of the way. A mentor offers valuable insights and wisdom gained from their own experiences helping you navigate challenges and make informed decisions. Crucially, a good mentor can lend you inside knowledge and experience that can make the difference. A ‘roadmap’ if you will.

They believe in your potential, instilling confidence & motivation, propelling you toward your goals. With their unwavering support, you gain not only knowledge but a sense of belonging, knowing that someone genuinely cares about your growth and success.

My Story

Born in the UK, we emigrated to the Middle East in 1979, and were suddenly displaced at the start of the Gulf War (1990). Through the turmoil, we moved to the far-east, and eventually, returned to the UK where I attended secondary school. I travelled after my ‘A-levels’ and found a medical school in Budapest, and decided to take a chance on something wild, new & life-changing. Although the teaching was in English, I learned a new language, culture and truly loved my time there! I got married in Oslo in my 5th year, and we returned to the UK.

After training as a GP in Kent, I felt that my learning journey was ‘incomplete’. I couldn’t put my finger on it, but I was looking for something more. After MRCGP, I enrolled as a Psychiatric Core Trainee, achieved Section 12 status, and was asked to join what I fondly and somewhat euphemistically call ‘the medical civil service’ as a Clinical Lead in Mental Health for NHS Thanet Clinical Commissioning Group, and entered the brave new world of commissioning.

Five years later, I was voted in as CCG Clinical Chair. This was truly a baptism of fire, the heat shield was off! I was exposed to new level of medical politics, policy and responsibility. Through that period, I helped reconfigure stroke services in the South East, I was Clinical Director for Hospital/Community Transformation (budget £450m), and led on many clinical areas, as diverse as ‘Children & Adolescents, Dementia, Learning Disabilities, Maternity, Mental Health’ and others. I received media training, worked with MPs, think tanks and even got invited to the House of Lords!

Sensing the ‘changing of the guard’ again, with another NHS reconfiguration, I returned to university and won 2 fully - funded NHS scholarships to study health economics & policy, followed by global healthcare leadership. The trigger was the inaugural Kent and Medway Medical School lecture by Prof. Chris Whitty. I had the privilege of meeting him as Thanet Clinical Chair in 2020, literally on the cusp of the pandemic. The thesis in a nutshell, was that life expectancy has risen consistently and inexorably in almost all disease domains. That is clearly not down to medicine alone, but is a function of public policy, legal advances, engineering and multi-disciplinary action.  I am by nature an outward thinker, and have always been fascinated by the interface between medicine, the humanities, law and other disciplines. The vision was so appealing and enticing, I was sold and applied for funding. My journey has taken me to Rome, Pavia, Ahmedabad, Trivandrum, Bangkok, New Haven, Mae Sot, Kathmandu, Butwal, Pokhara & more.

Through life experience, work and academia, I can share stories of resilience, motivation and in retrospect, moments of pure madness! If you are after clarity, purposeful and intentional guidance, then I can help.

Dr. Amina
General Practitioner

I spoke to Jihad when I was at a cross-roads in my career, I have worked in clinical medicine for a long time but wanted to move on to an ICB leadership position.

The conversation with Jihad was the perfect mix of explorative and non-directive, and also informative and rich with suggestions, learning and ideas. He signposted me to some really key resources and bits of learning e.g. about the commissioning cycle which have since then been invaluable.

I am really pleased to say that after speaking to Jihad I was successful in being appointed as the ICP Clinical director for Children's services- a place based leadership position in an area I am passionate about- and I have really been enjoying and thriving in this role since.

Dr. SN
Emergency Medicine Doctor - Ireland

Dr. S Ling
GP Partner at Whitstable Medical Practice

Jihad has been an excellent mentor and guide in helping me understand the various facets of global health. His insights into the different avenues within the field were incredibly valuable, particularly in showing me how to leverage both my South African clinical experience and my current work in Emergency Medicine in Ireland.

Through our conversations, he helped me clarify a core value of mine — the desire to make a positive impact on health systems. His thoughtful guidance and generous support have been instrumental in shaping how I consider the next steps in my career.

When I qualified as GP, the transition felt daunting—new responsibilities, complex clinical decisions, and the overwhelming sense that I was just beginning to understand what it meant to be a GP.

It was during this time that I had the privilege of being mentored by Dr. Malasi who not only guided me clinically but also inspired me to think beyond the walls of the consultation room.

From the outset, he offered me genuine support, practical guidance, and the kind of encouragement that gives a new doctor the confidence to grow. He never gave me the answers outright, but instead equipped me with the tools to find them myself—instilling in me a mindset of reflection, curiosity, and continual learning.

What truly set him apart was his ability to see potential even before I could. He encouraged me to explore broader roles within primary care, ultimately leading me to apply for and secure a position as a Health Education England Fellow. That experience was transformative, expanding my leadership skills and my understanding of how we can influence healthcare systems to improve outcomes for patients and colleagues alike.

Today, I’m proud to serve as a GP partner in one of the best performing practices in Kent—a milestone I would not have reached without the foundational support of this exceptional mentor. His belief in me, coupled with his dedication to teaching and developing others, has had a lasting impact on my career and the kind of doctor I strive to be.

I’m deeply grateful for the time, wisdom, and genuine care he invested in my journey. His mentorship has not only shaped my path but continues to influence how I support and inspire others entering the profession.
